Introducing Sisu, a therapy practice dedicated to helping you connect with your inner strength.

Sisu (pronounced si-soo) is a Finnish word that means extraordinary determination and courage, especially in the face of adversity.
“At the core of sisu is the idea that in each of us there is more strength than meets the eye.”
-Emilia Lahti

Our mission
To help you connect with your authentic self and uncover the innate strength and wisdom that lead to personal fulfillment and peace.
Our approach
Our work is grounded in the belief that we all benefit from having a judgment-free space in which to explore our strengths and difficulties. We bring compassion and empathy, guided by evidence-based techniques, to your story, because we believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is essential to success in therapy. Whether you desire timely help with navigating a particular situation (2-3 sessions), periodic check-ins to maintain optimal wellness, or traditional psychotherapy with clinical assessment and treatment goals to address a diagnosed mental health condition, we aim to meet your needs with a progressive model of care. Your time is valuable, and our hope is that you will take something away from each meeting at Sisu.
We specialize in working with college students, and young and mid-career professionals who feel stuck, depressed, anxious, stressed, lonely, or unfocused. We will help you recognize the barriers that stand in the way of living a life aligned with your values. You’ll see things from a new perspective, gain coping skills, and ultimately become your own therapist.
Our Services
Because people seek therapy for a variety of reasons, we believe it’s important to offer a range of services tailored to your unique needs and goals.
Timely Consultation
This service is designed for people seeking objective support in navigating a particular situation, such as weighing an important decision, approaching a consequential conversation or improving common life difficulties. Generally scheduled as an extended session (approximately 75-80 min). $220.
Typically, because there is no assessment or diagnosis, insurance will not reimburse for this service. However, services are considered eligible for HSA or FSA.
Individual Psychotherapy
This service is appropriate for people who want to invest in getting to know themselves and their needs so that they can take steps to improve their quality of life. This is a collaborative process where you and the therapist determine areas of focus and goals, essentially creating a roadmap for your work together. Individual therapy includes an assessment, sometimes a diagnosis, and an individualized treatment plan that typically involves a minimum commitment of 4-6 sessions. $180 (75 min initial session), $120 (subsequent 50 min sessions).
These sessions are typically reimbursed at your insurance provider’s out-of-network rate.
Walking Therapy
Teletherapy
Teletherapy is a useful service for individuals who prefer meeting from the comfort of their home or office. Whether you want to eliminate travel time for in-office appointments, live in a different part of the state or prefer to be in your own space for reasons of health or comfort, teletherapy can meet you where you are.
Teletherapy sessions follow the professional fee structure described above.
May be eligible for reimbursement at the out-of-network rate. Check with your insurance provider.

Walking Therapy
Walking therapy is offered for individuals seeking an active approach to mental health that incorporates mind and body. It may be appropriate for both timely consultation and individual psychotherapy, depending on your needs and preferences. For many, this option provides a more relaxed environment than the counseling office and gets you moving, both literally and figuratively. Research has consistently shown the benefits of exercise on mood, focus and management of stress and anxiety. All fitness levels are welcome, because you set the pace.
Walking sessions follow the fee structure described above.
Depending on the service selected, these sessions may be reimbursed at your insurance provider’s out-of-network rate.

Text Support
Because sometimes all you need is a brief, same-day consultation to help you through a particular situation or decision, we offer a text support service.
This service may be a helpful addition for people already accessing individual therapy, or for those who are looking for an occasional touchstone to maintain balance and self-care in lieu of therapy sessions. Text support is only available to people who have first met with a Sisu therapist in person or via teletherapy.
This service is not appropriate for people whose concerns require immediate response, such as those in acute crisis or those whose safety is at risk.
If you choose to access this service, you can expect a reply within 24 hours, Monday through Friday. Weekend messages may not receive a reply until the following Monday. Billed in 15-minute increments according to the fee schedule above ($30 per 15 minutes of therapeutic support provided).
Insurance reimbursement does not apply.

Our Team
Meet Sisu’s therapists.

I believe each client possesses the wisdom and resilience they need to be successful in therapy. My job is to help you connect the threads of your story in a way that shines light on what needs to change, and to suggest evidence-based steps to make those changes. I’ll ask good questions, listen fully and offer tangible ways to meet your goals. I’ll bring respect and genuine curiosity to our sessions, always remembering that you are in charge of the direction of therapy.
During the past 17 years, I’ve had the honor of supporting many people on their journeys toward mental health, working in an intensive outpatient program at a psychiatric hospital, as a therapist in private practice, and as a therapist at the Furman University Counseling Center.
While I specialize in working with young adults who are experiencing situational stress, major transitions, difficult or traumatic experiences, anxiety, and depression, I have interest and expertise in working with adults of all ages. My approach is eclectic and includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma informed care (EMDR). I graduated from the University of Georgia School of Social work in 2008. My undergraduate degree is in English and French, from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio.
Family and the outdoors are my passions. I live with my husband, two girls and three dogs in Travelers Rest, SC, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I believe each client possesses the wisdom and resilience they need to be successful in therapy.

I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to be a part of someone’s life story and look forward to getting to know your authentic self. Respecting where you are today, I aim to listen attentively to what is working for you and where you feel there is room for growth, and assist you in taking steps to meet your desired outcomes. I approach relationship building with a joyful curiosity and interest that is free of judgment. My goal is to help you find balance in your life and freedom from interferences such as chronic stress, conflict, anger or poor self-esteem in a comfortable, professional setting.
Working in the field of mental health for almost 20 years, I have had the privilege to support many individuals in their goals to improve wellbeing and navigate life’s challenges. Although my work is grounded in evidence-based practices such as CBT, TF-CBT, Positive Psychology and DBT, I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Rather, I view therapy as a collaborative process that is individualized and requires creativity. You will find sessions feel relaxed versus formal.
My niche is working with college students and young professionals, but I also enjoy companioning individuals of all ages through significant life events such as a move, a job change, loss of a loved one, divorce or challenges with personal relationships. I also have extensive experience treating depression, anxiety and ADHD. Walking sessions are near and dear to my heart, as they provide an opportunity to nurture both mind and body, and support an active lifestyle while benefiting from the outdoors.
I was born and raised in beautiful Greenville, SC, and received my BA in Psychology from Clemson University and MSW from The University of Georgia. Following graduate school, I spent 12 years in the Charleston area both in academic and private practice settings. In 2014, I returned home to Greenville with my husband and three daughters, where I took a position at the Furman University Counseling Center.
Given my Finnish heritage, Sisu is a concept that is particularly close to my heart. It embodies a genuine trust in the authentic self. I will help you become acquainted/reacquainted with your inner strength and abilities, allowing you to live the life you deserve—to thrive versus simply survive. I believe change is possible, and each day presents an opportunity for growth.

I specialize in working with college students and young professionals, while also supporting adults of all ages through meaningful life transitions including relocation, career changes, grief and loss, divorce, and relationship challenges. I have extensive experience treating depression, anxiety and ADHD using evidence-based approaches tailored to each person’s unique needs. I aim to help you build resilience, self-compassion and skills to both design, and manage your life. I also offer walking sessions, which provide a meaningful way to combine movement with therapy and can be especially beneficial for those who find comfort in nature, value a more active approach, or feel more at ease outside a traditional office setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
No. Sisu therapists do not accept or file insurance claims and are considered “out-of-network.” However, both FSA and HSA cards are accepted. Payment receipts are sent following payment for each session, and a superbill will be available on your client portal each month for you to submit to your provider to request out-of network reimbursement. If you prefer to receive a superbill following each session rather than monthly, your therapist can provide this to you. We encourage you to call your insurance provider to inquire about their out-of-network benefits for mental health.
How do I make an appointment?
Call our main number, 864-412-8113, or send an e-mail message to info@sisucenter.net. Brook or Amanda will call you back for a free phone consultation to determine which of our services best fits your needs.
What are your methods of payment?
We accept all major debit and credit cards, HSA and FSA cards, checks, or cash (if exact). Payment is due at the end of each session. The majority of our clients prefer the convenience of our auto pay feature on the client portal, which charges your card at the end of the day your session occurs.
What is your cancellation policy?
Because we reserve time specifically for you when you schedule an appointment, we require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for rescheduling or cancelling a session. We understand life happens, and sometimes 24-hour notice is not possible. We will extend grace and compassion for such circumstances.
Can you tell me more about walking therapy?
Walking therapy is casual. You should wear whatever you feel comfortable walking in, keeping in mind you’re likely to get warmer while you walk. The primary goal of walking therapy is therapy, which is why you set the pace. All fitness levels are welcome. Should you desire a more vigorous pace, we are happy to accommodate.
We aim to walk on trails that are not heavily traveled. However, there’s a chance you may encounter someone you know. Your therapist will take your lead, but generally people recognize you’re in conversation and just wave and keep moving. No one needs to know it’s a therapy session. We are also amenable to changing the walking route should confidentiality become a concern.
Our goal is to make sure you are always comfortable. Should you become emotional during the walk, there are often private places where we can stop and sit.
However, many clients find the act of walking can itself be a therapeutic way to work through the intensity of an emotion.
Do you work with children or adolescents?
We do not work with children. We generally work with adults 18 and older, but occasionally an adolescent client may be appropriate for our practice. This would be determined on a case by case basis.
Do you work with couples or families?
While our focus is on individual therapy, we occasionally work with couples or families, either in support of individual work, or in the context of timely professional consultation (see “Our Services”). Generally, couples or families seeking intensive, longer-term therapy may be more appropriate for a practice that specializes in marriage or family therapy.
Do you work with the LGBTQ+ community?
We offer an affirming environment for the LGBTQ+ community. Although we have experience working with this population, we don’t identify as members of or experts in this community.
What conditions are not typically treated by Sisu therapists?
Generally speaking, Sisu therapists refer individuals whose primary concerns are acute eating disorders, complex trauma, addictions, or acute suicidality to practices in the community who specialize in these areas.
